If your tooth gets knocked out, you’re not alone. About five million teeth get knocked out in the Unites States every year. The culprits include car accidents, falling off a bike, and playing sports. And kids aren’t the only victims; adults get their teeth knocked out, too.
Dr. Samir Patel at Plainsboro Family Dentistry in Plainsboro, NJ, can help save your tooth. Here’s what you should do if your tooth gets knocked out.
Time is not on your side when your tooth gets knocked. It’s important to stay calm, but act fast. First, find the broken piece of tooth or the knocked out tooth and keep it moist while getting to our office as soon as possible. Dr. Patel can bond your broken tooth or reinsert your knocked out tooth.
You’ve got about an hour to save the tooth if you handle it properly. When you find the tooth, pick it up by the crown, your tooth’s chewing surface. Don’t touch the root.
Rinse the tooth quickly in milk, if available. If you must rinse with water, use bottled water, not tap. After rinsing, reinsert the tooth back into its socket. Apply pressure and hold for at least five minutes. Maintain this pressure while you travel to Dr. Patel’s office.
If the tooth won’t stay put, use gauze to pack it into the socket. To keep the tooth moist, tuck it inside of your cheek where saliva will keep it wet. If you fear you or a child might swallow or choke on the tooth, put it in a cup of milk to keep it moist until you can reach our office.
The best way to restore your knocked-out tooth is to visit our office quickly for an emergency appointment. During an emergency visit, Dr. Patel might be able to reimplant your tooth.
For a few weeks, you might have to have the tooth attached to other teeth. You might also need a root canal in the future.
If your tooth can’t be saved, Dr. Patel can restore your smile with a bridge or dental implant.
If your tooth gets knocked out, or if you have any other general dentistry needs, you can book an appointment with Dr. Patel at our Plainsboro, NJ, office. To schedule an appointment, call 609-277-2391, or use our online booking tool.
